ABOUT THE WILDLIFE SCIENCE CENTER

About Us

The Wildlife Science Center is a nationally recognized education and research facility. It is an independent nonprofit organization that is currently located on the grounds of the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area in Forest Lake, MN, an expansive natural habitat just 40 minutes from downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul.WSC is currently home to 43 gray wolves, 10 red wolves, 5 hybrids, 2 Lynx, 1 red fox, 1 skunk, 1 porcupine, 7 birds of prey, 3 bears, 2 gray fox, 3 raccoons and 2 New Guinea Highland Dogs. Most of the animals are on exhibit so please come out for a tour to see them. The Center's mission is: to serve as an educational resource for all ages by providing exposure to wild animals and the body of knowledge generated for their conservation.; To advance understanding of wild animal biology through long-term, humane scientific studies on captive populations thus contributing to species conservation and maintenance in the wild and in captivity; and To provide unique scientific and technical training for wildlife agencies, educational institutions and conservation agencies.

The WSC continues to strive for excellence in all aspects of its mission. To better meet the needs of the professional community and the public WSC purchased land 8 miles north in Linwood Township. The new land included a beautiful log home, various outbuildings and 160 acres of partly forested habitat just 10 minutes north of our current location.

Moving to the new facility will enable WSC to: 1) better assist programs to conserve and study the red wolf and unique gray wolf subspecies that require captive space at this point in their recovery efforts; 2) allow for new programs to not only discuss but show the interconnectedness of Minnesota's ecosystems; 3) increase the size of many enclosures to provide for the animals an even more stress-free and natural environment and; 4) to accommodate increased visitation for those who desire to learn from these animals.

We are currently working to raise the 1.3 Million plus to complete the buildout of buildings, pathways, animal enclosures and facilities needed to make the move. We are always greatful for your support become a member and help us make the move.
